At M&P Landscaping, we time our shrub and tree planting services around the windows that give new installations the best chance of establishing before the most demanding stretch of the season. Planting can be done any time of the year, but these two periods of the year for best establishment. Our crews prioritize getting annuals in after May 1 and wrapped up mid-month.
Most trees and shrubs can start going in the ground as soon as they can be dug, typically starting in early March and ideally wrapping by mid-to late June. Most perennials and summer annuals are best suited for installation after May 1 and can often be planted well into July.
The fall window runs from early September through late December. Cooler temperatures and reliable moisture give newly installed trees and shrubs the conditions they need to root properly before winter sets in.
What’s the difference between planting and transplanting?
Planting is the installation of new plant material that was shipped in from a nursery or grower. Transplanting is moving existing plant material from one area of your property to another, whether to reorganize a bed, improve growing conditions, or make room for something new. M&P handles both as part of every planting project, with the same installation care and soil prep regardless of which approach the property needs.
Can M&P handle both the design and the planting?
Yes. We work from existing plans, add supplemental material to what’s already in the beds, or take on full redesigns with a licensed landscape architect developing a complete plan from scratch. For larger projects, phased designs are available for homeowners who want to build toward a bigger vision over time.
How do I keep my new trees and shrubs healthy after planting?
Newly installed trees and shrubs need to be watered appropriately and can potentially benefit from a fertilization and plant health care program in the seasons after installation. Our sister company St. Louis Ornamental & Turf specializes in plant health care and works alongside M&P so new installations get the right attention after they go in. Ongoing mulching, pruning, watering instruction, and bed maintenance through our landscape maintenance services also supports long-term plant health.
